My weekend this time around was really interesting and something that I was looking forward to. Main reason being I would be spending good 4 hours on two days with children. I wasn't even sure the distance I had to travel cause the children were staying near Bannerghatta, Bangalore. I thought it would be a good idea to take my car but since folks at home needed it I had to opt for an auto rickshaw. It was another totally adventurous ride and dedicating another post to it wouldn't be a bad idea ;-)
Thanks to my brilliant idea of partying on Friday night, I wasn't myself completely with the children. I hadn't gotten enough sleep as well and I had this nagging headache as I haven't had vodka for like ages. I really don't enjoy drinking these days even in a social scenario and if I would feel like it would be either wine or in on warm days a beer. Yeah! I know you don't hear many women enjoying beer :-) Looks like I'm deviating here and I need to pen down my experience with the children.
I was amazed at their confidence and the power to grasp anything I was talking to them about. They were excellent in dumb charades even though it was actually the first time they were playing it. I enjoyed being a kid amongst them as I always do but hold back myself in most situations, especially with people who I meet for the first time :-)
They are good at English as a language and Math as far as I could infer. Excellent at communicating as well as expressing themselves. I was really happy to see that the people who have started this school are serious about their work. Even the facility is well maintained and ideal for any child to learn and grow. Each of them coming from various villages across India, mostly South India. Every child has a story which deprived them of the right to be educated and found a path to this school through their own interest as well as the administrators of the foundation.
Today, I was involved in bringing two girls along with their mother who happens to be a heart patient to the school from the main road. This school or rather a home is in the interiors and it was terribly warm today. I was asked by our fellow volunteer if we could get them to this place from where they got off a bus. It was amazing to me for two reasons, one is that I recently started driving after a long break and secondly I was happy to be of some use as I knew to drive. I always known that being able to drive around is a necessity in such times as well as being able to drive your folks around is another happy moment for anyone. Especially moms are the happiest people seeing their kids being self dependent in all respects and not only financially. Emotional Independence is the best thing that could happen to anyone and I have finally found myself through this.
I wasn't keeping too well today and was in two minds to go back to spend time with the children. Then, something in me told me that I could do it and since I had committed myself to this, I just felt responsible for any decision I would make. I know that since this was the first time I actually volunteered for something that made a change to others as well as my life, I should give myself completely without backing out due to any reason.
I loved my weekend and 4 hours well spent and probably the best thing I have done in my life. I would continue to find ways to enrich others lives with my exposure as well as make my life worth living.
